Personalised, clinically supervised support combining health assessment, practical lifestyle guidance, regular reviews and treatment where appropriate. Designed around your individual health, circumstances and goals—not a one-size-fits-all plan.
Tynewydd, local to Treherbert, Treorchy, and the Rhondda Valley.
Weight management is about far more than willpower. Biology, health conditions, medicines, sleep, habits, stress and everyday circumstances can all influence weight and make change more difficult.
At Tynewydd Pharmacy, we take time to understand what has brought you to this point, what you would like to achieve and what support may be appropriate. Together, we will develop a realistic plan focused on your health, confidence and longer-term wellbeing.
Our service combines clinical assessment with practical support, regular monitoring and honest conversations about progress. If treatment is not suitable, or another healthcare professional is better placed to help, we will explain the recommended next steps.
The following is included as part of the service.
When your first treatment supply is made, you will receive our Tynewydd Weight Management Support Booklet together with our Eat Better booklet. These are included in the service price and are designed to help you put the advice discussed during your appointments into practice.
The Tynewydd booklet includes practical guidance on hunger and cravings, protein and fibre, meal planning, sustainable habits, movement and strength, and maintaining progress over the longer term. The Eat Better booklet provides additional help with making balanced, realistic food choices.
The booklets are provided at the first full consultation when the first treatment supply is made. They are not issued during a brief initial suitability assessment.
The service is for adults aged 18 and over who are living with overweight or obesity. Medicine-specific criteria apply, so suitability and the available options can only be confirmed following an individual clinical assessment.
Current treatment pathways generally require a BMI of at least 30 kg/m², or at least 27 kg/m² with a relevant weight-related health condition. Exact criteria vary between treatments and individual circumstances.
Gareth will discuss your health, current medicines, allergies, previous weight-management approaches and any relevant medical conditions. Please provide an up-to-date list of your medicines.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, certain health conditions and some medicines may make treatment unsuitable or mean that advice from another healthcare professional is required.
Recent blood-test results can sometimes be helpful. Following assessment, Gareth may recommend blood tests, further information or a review by your GP before treatment can be considered.
We can assess patients who would like to transfer their weight-management care from another regulated provider. A new clinical assessment will be required before we can prescribe or supply treatment.
Please bring or provide:
Do not overlap treatments, change products or restart treatment following a break without clinical advice.
Your scheduled review takes place face to face with Gareth every four weeks. At each review, we will check your weight, waist measurement and blood pressure, discuss your progress and goals, and review any side effects, health changes or changes to your medicines.
Progress is about more than a single number. Reviews can also explore changes in eating habits, activity, confidence, health and everyday wellbeing.
Additional telephone support is available when clinically required at no extra charge. If additional face-to-face contact would be more appropriate, this can be discussed with Gareth.
Your clinical consultations are led by Gareth Hughes, MRCPharm, IP, owner and superintendent pharmacist at Tynewydd Pharmacy. Gareth has more than 20 years' community-pharmacy experience and was named UKnIndependent Pharmacist of the Year at the 2025 Independent Pharmacy Awards.
He particularly values supporting patients over time—not simply reviewing numbers, but seeing changes in confidence, activity, health and everyday life.
Treatment is never assumed before your consultation. Gareth will assess your health, circumstances and suitability, discuss the available approaches and help you make an informed decision.
Where prescription treatment is clinically appropriate, it forms one part of a wider programme that includes lifestyle support and regular review. Booking a consultation does not guarantee that treatment will be prescribed.
If a particular approach is not suitable or further information or investigation is needed, we will explain why and discuss appropriate next steps.
Book a brief initial suitability assessment if needed, or arrange your first full appointment.
Gareth will review your health, medicines, previous experience and what you would like to achieve.
Your weight, waist measurement and blood pressure will be recorded, together with any other clinically relevant information.
Gareth will explain suitable approaches, expected monitoring and costs. Booking or attending does not guarantee that treatment will be prescribed.
If treatment is clinically appropriate and you decide to proceed, your first full consultation and treatment supply will be completed. You will receive the Tynewydd Weight Management Support Booklet and Eat Better booklet at this stage.
You will have a scheduled face-to-face review every four weeks, with additional telephone support available when clinically required.
