Travel health consultation at Tynewydd Pharmacy

About this service

Every journey is different. The advice and protection you may need depend on where you are travelling, how long you will be away, your planned activities, accommodation, medical history and previous vaccinations.

During your consultation, we will complete an individual travel-health risk assessment, explain any recommended or required vaccinations and discuss other health considerations relevant to your trip.

Ideally, contact us at least six to eight weeks before travelling. Some vaccination courses require more than one dose, but even if your departure date is closer, it is still worth getting in touch.

Some travel vaccinations may be available free through your GP practice under NHS Wales arrangements, depending on current arrangements and clinical need.

Other travel vaccinations are usually provided privately. We will explain the cost of anything offered through Tynewydd Pharmacy before you proceed.

Requirements depend on your destination, itinerary and sometimes the countries through which you travel. Yellow fever vaccination may be recommended for personal protection, required for entry, or both.

Tynewydd Pharmacy is a designated Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre. We can assess whether vaccination is recommended for your itinerary and whether an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis is required for your journey. Vaccination is subject to individual clinical assessment and vaccine availability.

Please bring details of every country and region you plan to visit, your travel dates, accommodation, planned activities, previous vaccination records, regular medicines, allergies and relevant medical conditions. If more than one person is travelling, each traveller will require an individual assessment.

Yes. Although earlier planning provides more options, a consultation may still be worthwhile. We can assess what protection remains appropriate and explain any limitations caused by the time available.

Not necessarily. This depends on your previous vaccination history, the vaccines recommended, clinical suitability, stock availability and whether a course requires more than one dose. We will explain the proposed schedule during your consultation.
