Since 1985, Tynewydd Pharmacy has served the local community across Tynewydd, Treherbert, Treorchy and the wider Rhondda Valley. Today, we combine the personal care of a community pharmacy with the award-winning clinical expertise of a modern healthcare clinic.

Tynewydd Pharmacy was founded in 1985 in the heart of Tynewydd, Treherbert, at a time when the Rhondda Valley was going through enormous change. From the very beginning, our mission was simple: to be a pharmacy that truly cares — one that knows its patients by name and goes the extra mile.
Since our new ownership in 2022, we've grown from a traditional dispensing pharmacy into a full-service healthcare clinic, adding independent prescribers, a travel clinic, weight management services, ear wax removal, and much more. But through all of that growth, one thing has never changed: our commitment to the people of the Rhondda.
We're proudly independent. We're not owned by a chain or a corporate group — we're owned and run by a pharmacist with deep roots in Tynewydd, and a team who live and work in this community. That means every decision we make is guided by what's best for our patients, not a boardroom.
Tynewydd Pharmacy opened its doors on Gwendoline Street, serving the local community with dispensing and health advice from day one.
Purchased by Gareth Hughes, our owner and superintendent pharmacist. Gareth set about building and developing a dedicated team with a clear vision for the future of the pharmacy.
A landmark year of growth — we expanded our NHS prescribing offer, launched our full Travel Clinic, and introduced our clinically supervised Weight Management programme.
Recognised for outstanding business development, with thousands of clinical consultations delivered across our growing range of healthcare services.
We are planning significant investment in new consultation rooms and growing our healthcare services — laying the foundations for the next chapter of Tynewydd Pharmacy.
Our ambition is to become one of Wales' leading independent healthcare clinics — always putting the people of the Rhondda first.
Our values shape how we care for people, make decisions, and define the standard we set for ourselves every day
We're not a chain. We are independent, locally owned, and part of the community we serve. We listen, remember the person behind the prescription and make decisions with local needs in mind.
We combine professional judgement with current evidence, honest advice and clear explanations. When we can help, we do; if another service is better placed, we say so..
Good healthcare should feel straightforward to access. We provide same-day convenient advice, assessment and treatment close to home, often without the need for a GP appointment.
We take the time to know our patients, not simply their prescriptions. Our responsibility does not always end when a consultation does. We follow up where needed, communicate with other healthcare professionals and help patients understand what happens next.
The progress made at Tynewydd Pharmacy has been recognised through a series of respected Welsh and UK pharmacy awards.
These awards recognise different parts of our story: the transformation of the pharmacy, the development of accessible clinical services, professional leadership and the contribution of our wider pharmacy team.

Read about the Outstanding Contribution AwardWe are proud of this recognition, but awards are not the purpose of our work. What matters is what the changes behind them mean for our patients: more services available locally, greater access to clinical advice and a pharmacy team equipped to provide increasingly comprehensive care.
We are a small, close-knit team — and we see that as one of our strengths. It allows us to know our patients, work closely together and continually develop the services we can offer our community.
Professional in our standards. Personal in our care.

Insert portrait of Gareth
Owner, Superintendent Pharmacist & Independent Prescriber
Gareth has worked in community pharmacy for more than 20 years, building his career in pharmacies across the South Wales Valleys. Before purchasing Tynewydd Pharmacy in 2022, he served as Professional Services Lead and Superintendent Pharmacist for Sheppards Pharmacy, and later as Deputy Superintendent Pharmacist and Welsh Clinical Lead for Avicenna.
As an independent prescriber, Gareth particularly values being able to assess and treat patients closer to home — from providing reassurance and straightforward treatment to recognising serious illness requiring urgent hospital care. He is passionate about introducing new clinical services and especially enjoys supporting patients through weight management, seeing the changes in their health, confidence and everyday lives.
Gareth was named UK Independent Pharmacist of the Year in 2025 and contributes to the future of pharmacy through professional and advisory roles across Wales and nationally. His connection to Tynewydd also runs through his family: his great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather lived and worked in Tynewydd and Blaencwm as part of his Welsh-speaking Hughes family.
In 2025, Gareth was named Independent Pharmacist of the Year at the UK-wide Independent Pharmacy Awards. The award recognised his leadership, clinical work and commitment to developing Tynewydd Pharmacy as an accessible, service-led pharmacy for the Rhondda Valley.
He regards the award as recognition not only of his own work, but of the commitment of the entire Tynewydd Pharmacy team and the support of the community it serves.

Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician
With more than 20 years of pharmacy experience, Emma joined Tynewydd shortly after Gareth took ownership in 2022. Originally from Ferndale, she had previously worked with Gareth during their time at Sheppards Pharmacy.
Emma leads and supports several important services, including flu vaccination, stop smoking, Discharge Medicines Reviews, and contraception. She loves talking with patients and building the relationships that make community pharmacy so rewarding.
Highly organised and a natural team leader, Emma also helps keep the dispensary and medicine stock running smoothly, particularly when shortages make obtaining medicines more difficult. Since joining Tynewydd, her work has been recognised with four major Welsh and UK pharmacy awards, including C+D Pharmacy Technician of the Year 2025.
Emma's contribution to patients, colleagues and the pharmacy profession has received recognition across Wales and the UK.
She was named Pharmacy Technician of the Year at both the Welsh Pharmacy Awards and Independent Pharmacy Awards in 2024. In the same year, she received the Outstanding Contribution Award at the Recognition of Excellence Awards.
In 2025, Emma was again recognised nationally when she was named Pharmacy Technician of the Year at the C+D Awards.
These awards reflect the qualities our patients and team see every day: Emma's clinical knowledge, calm leadership, commitment to professional development and genuine care for the people she supports.

Accuracy Checking Pharmacy Technician
Rhian joined Tynewydd in 2025, bringing previous experience as an accuracy checking pharmacy technician and a strong local connection: she and her family are from Tynewydd, where she continues to live.
She particularly enjoys providing our ear wax microsuction service and also supports Discharge Medicines Reviews and contraception, while continuing to develop her skills in smoking cessation and vaccination.
Rhian played an important role in moving the pharmacy to its new digital Patient Medication Record system — a completely new way of working that helps the team manage prescriptions more effectively and create more time for patient care.

Pharmacy Technician
Cari is Tynewydd Pharmacy's longest-serving team member, having cared for its patients for more than 20 years. She lives locally in Treherbert and became a registered pharmacy technician in 2022.
After so many years at Tynewydd, Cari sometimes seems to know more about our patients and their medicines than the computer does. That knowledge is invaluable in helping us provide genuinely personal, continuous care.
Cari has also completed training in ear wax microsuction and is continuing to develop her role in the pharmacy's growing range of clinical services.
Insert portrait of Mackenzie
Trainee Pharmacist
Mackenzie is from the Rhondda and first joined Tynewydd as a pharmacy student three years ago. Having completed her Master of Pharmacy degree at Swansea University, she is now beginning the next stage of her development with us as a trainee pharmacist.
We have had the privilege of watching Mackenzie grow from a first-year student into an integral member of the team. She works within the dispensary, supports Gareth with patient and medicine enquiries, and is trained to provide ear wax microsuction.
During her training year, Mackenzie will continue preparing for pharmacist registration while developing towards practice as an independent prescriber.
Insert portrait of Bryan
Pharmacy Delivery Driver
Bryan joined Tynewydd Pharmacy in 2022 and delivers medicines three days each week to patients across the local community, including many who may find it difficult to visit the pharmacy.
Living locally, Bryan has come to know many of our patients well. For him, a delivery is rarely just a handover at the door, it is also an opportunity for a familiar face and a good conversation.
Familiar faces. Growing experitse. One team, continually raising the standard.
Trust should be supported by more than words. Our pharmacy combines professional regulation, NHS service standards, specialist clinical qualifications and a commitment to continued improvement.
